Good day yall! I am currently sitting on a plane heading back to Toronto from Vancouver. According to the digital map, I am hovering right above Lake Huron. I want to take this time to accept a challenge from my friend Mario. No, it wasn’t a fight that he challenged me to, but a question (and you don’t want to fight this guy, his work ethics alone is enough to beat you!).

“I do have to challenge you on the blog ... How dear is fighting to you? What drives it ... personal? Family? Narcissism? Ego? Fear of failure or success? “

Sam Sheridon, author of A Fighter’s Heart would agree with me when I say fighters try to avoid these questions, and for good reasons. It can get personal and go into very taboo areas. However in this case, I am happy to give what little opinion I have on this.

I am going to assume these questions can be sum up into one question – “Why do you fight?” There isn’t a clear cut reason as to why I fight. There are multiple reasons; some carry more weight than others. I am probably expected to give a list of reasons to logically justify why I fight. However, I would like to approach this question from a different angle. I am going to propose that it comes from deep down. It is more of a feeling rather than an understanding.

The challenges one goes through in preparation for a bout, the constant internal fighting to keep your motivation going, and the struggle to keep your dreams alive requires more than any reasons and thought.

I am fortunate enough to have the support from family and friends, and opportunities to pursue what I enjoy doing. I honor this by accepting that this is what I was put here to do, and for the time given to me, will pursue it with passion and determination. If I listen to my heart, I know that I am on the right path.

Of course, nothing is ever black and white so here’s my list as to why I fight:

1. Grew up watching Kung Fu and Martial Arts flicks.
2. To gain recognition and glory
3. To be fit, healthy, and look good :)
4. To make a living
5. To prove to myself and others that I can
6. Offers me a chance to grow and learn
7. Upbringing

Note: These thoughts are based on my experiences, and pertain more specifically to me. I also understand that you can approach this topic from many angles, all of which are equally valid.
