ABOUT LEGACY
Legacy is where you
  • learn to defend yourself with practical Muay Thai techniques using elbows, punches, kicks and knees.
  • develop discipline, character, and self-respect.
  • can test your courage by competing in sanctioned bouts.
  • shed some pounds and reveal that long awaited 6 pack!
"Classes are as hard or as fun as you make it!  No one is going to push you to compete or force you to go to every class.   Of course I will try to bring the best out of every student while holding firm to the belief that ultimately each person is responsible for their own choices."  -Bao

A typical class
  • Skipping or jogging for warm-up.
  • Individual body based exercises such as pushups, sit-ups, jumping jacks, burpees, etc. These exercises are done one after another to promote and develop cardio vascular strength.
  •  Technical training.  Emphasis here will be on proper form and posture while punching and kicking, sufficient breathing, and a proper mind state throughout.
  •  Members will pair up. One will hold pads (thick protective cushions wrapped around their arms), the other will wear 14-16 oz gloves (provided by gym or you can bring your own). Here students will train the techniques taught in the technical training phase on pads held by their partners.
  •  Stretching and breathing drills to finish off.
What to bring
  • t-shirt and shorts (training will be conducted on bare feet).
  • a hydrating liquid.
  • your own additional training equipment (we also provide the necessary equipments for classes if you don't have any)
  • the right mindset for some serious training!

Seanchai Sor Kingstar - The Master Technician

Very few people can pull off a training montage with Van Damme's infamous Bloodsport theme song. Seanchai is one of those few. He is currently the best Pound for Pound Muay Thai fighter in the world. It's interesting to note that while most Thai fighters retire in their early to mid 20s, Seanchai is still going strong at nearly 30years old. At the same time, because there is noone else left to challenge him at his weight, Seanchai often gives up a few lbs in favor of his opponents.

LET IT GO

i noticed that i forgot to list one of the "Fight Styles" under the voting section, have a look:

The Attackers (aka "The Let It Go" style)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Play Styles

Every gaming community is a weird mirror image of every other gaming community. The same personalities and the same play styles seem to repeat themselves, ad infinitum. While reading about the personalities throughout the history of chess, I was struck by how similar it all was to the personalities I grew up with playing Street Fighter. I will now relate to you some of those personalities, and I will also take a very controversial stand: I believe that there is one style of play that is superior to all others. The upper echelons of gamers always seem to show a similar mix of varied play styles, but the one true style has its way of coming out on top. This is certainly not the style I am known for, but I’m working on it. Perhaps you will recognize these players in your own gaming communities

The Attackers
The Turtles

The Obsessed

The Snakes

The One True Style

The Invincible and The Beast

Damage negated, and countered baby!

Female Fighters

In case you all have been living in a cave, you are probably aware that there has been a great increase in female fighters lately. At TKO we have some awesome female athletes including Christine, Melissa, and Phadama (sorry i just butchered your name). Best watch out for these girls. They hit hard, and look good doing it.

Here's a clip of Gina Carano in action. One of the top female fighters around.

Update on 300 Mill and a Note on Shadowboxing

I was at the new location and it's looking great. Most of the painting is done, walls are up, lighting about done, and the metal rail for the punching/kicking bags is up. Flooring and a bit of tidying up and we're set to train! Looks like we are on schedule. Tomorrow night everything will be moved from the old location to the new. Get ready for the first class at our new home!

I apologize for not having the photos up. At the moment I don't have access to the camera that I used to take them.

:::Note on Shadowboxing:::

In the beginner class today, I emphasized the importance of shadowboxing. It is a crucial part of fight training. Some of the benefits you get from it include:

-Center of balance
-Reflexes
-Technique/form
-Concentration/focus
-Speed
-Economy of motion (the most efficient way of throwing a technique)
-Relaxation
-Flexibility

This is also the time when you formulate fight tactics and strategies.
Shadowboxing can can be done anywhere. Do it in front of the mirrors at home, in the showers, in your room, while you're walking, while you're running - be creative. Take advantage of this training tool and I promise your productivity will increase greatly. Believe me and try it.

Tips for Effective Shadowboxing

-punching at eye level
-using hips and legs to generate power
-always be aware of your center of balance, remain in fighting stance and always be grounded
-keep mind relaxed and "feel" it out
-repetition is the mother of all skill; chose a technique you would like to master and throw it over and over and over again
-strive to improve your technique and form every time you throw; use a mirror to help you with this
-remember to pivot
-stay grounded (do not let your feet leave the ground unless you are stepping to move or are kicking. 2 feet simultaneously should never leave the ground.)
-stay in control of yourself; be conscience of what, why and, how you are throwing your techniques

Yodsanklai vs Andy - SPOILER DO NOT SCROLL DOWN!

I must say that was a good fight. Andy did an amazing job keeping the constant pressure on Yodsanklai, and by the end, not giving him the space to generate those infamous left swing kicks. Most fighters succumb to the impact of Yod's kicks but Souwer did not. As my friend once said: "I think he's a cyborg or something." I think so too. As for Yodsanklai, I can't say I was surprised. I thought that a tough as hell, combo throwing, pressure fighter would be a competitive fight for Yod, and I was right. Yod threw a lot of counters in the beginning of the fight and many landed but eventually was overwhelmed by the constant pressure. He also didn't do that great in the clinch which was surprising since he's Thai, but that's probably because of Andy's relentless knee thrusts to his legs. Seeing that he's only 22, he'll be back.

My Score Card

1st Round: Yodsanklai
2nd Round: Draw
3rd Round: Andy

Extra Round: err. Andy.

Weekend Update

The drive to Siam on Friday turned into a 'road trip' that lasted longer than the training session itself. We left at 4:00pm from Waterloo and arrived at 6:15pm. Luckily for us, a few fighters were still game for some sparring. I had some good rounds, some rounds that could be better, but every round taught me something. Glad I had the opportunity to train at a different gym.

On the following Saturday, Issac Ingrao and Drew R. competed in a Jiu Jitsu Tournament. This was Issac's first grappling match; he impressively placed in 2nd. Drew not so surprisingly took home 1st place. Congratulations to you guys from the Team.

12:14am : After watching this clip, I was just itching to train!

The Three Pillars of Muay Thai Seminar

Melissa, Isaac, Chris, and myself attended the "Three Pillars of Muay Thai Seminar" hosted by Kru Gerald Ching, Kru Ajahn Suchart, and Kru Clifton Brown at Training Grounds in Mississauga. A very insightful weekend. Both days started off with some pad drills courtesy of Kru Gerald, followed by Kru Ajahn Suchart's footwork and shadow kicking techniques. We then received a taste of Kru Clifton Brown's mind. He talked to us about attack range and distance and how and when to attack an opponent using traditional Muay Thai techniques. He also covered other topics such as, cancellations, economy of motion, field of attack, center of balance, momentum, and timing. It definitely was a huge honor to meet and learn from such great and wise fighters. They made me realize the true complexity and depth of the sport.

Although, the highlight of the day was receiving that Fairtex Basketball Jersey. :)

--Notable Quotes--

"If it looks pretty, it wasn't Muay Thai. It has to look exact and punishing 100% of the time." -Samart Payakaroon (cited by Clifton)

"Nobody eats for free. If you eat, you have to pay." -Clifton Brown

"Love your body more than you girlfriend. Because your girlfriend will love you body too!" -Ajahn Suchart

This is Samart Payakaroon. He wasn't there, but I liked his quote. (3.14sec mark is a must see!)
